How do I bleed a radiator?

Short answer

Turn the heating off and let it cool, open the bleed valve at the top corner with a radiator key until air stops and water appears, close it, then check the boiler pressure and top up if needed.

What changes the answer

  • whether the system is sealed (pressure gauge) or tank-fed
  • how much air is in the system

What you can check yourself

  • have a cloth ready
  • check the boiler pressure afterwards

What to do next

If radiators need bleeding often, air is getting in somewhere — that is worth a look.
