What should I do if I smell gas?

Short answer

Turn off the gas at the meter if you can do it safely, open doors and windows, do not use switches, flames or phones in the house, then leave the house and ring the Gas Networks Ireland 24-hour emergency line from outside on 1800 20 50 50.

What changes the answer

  • how strong the smell is
  • whether it is near an appliance or the meter

What you can check yourself

  • know where your meter and its valve are before you ever need them (on LPG, the cylinder or tank valve, and your supplier's emergency number)

What to do next

Once Gas Networks Ireland has made the supply safe, an RGI needs to find and fix the cause.
