Do I need a carbon monoxide alarm?

Short answer

If you have any fuel-burning appliance — a gas or oil boiler, a stove or an open fire — you should have a carbon monoxide alarm. Building Regulations generally require one when a new or replacement boiler or stove is fitted, and landlords should make sure every rented home with a fuel-burning appliance has one.

What changes the answer

  • the appliances in the house
  • where they are and where people sleep

What you can check yourself

  • test the alarm monthly
  • check the expiry date on the back

What to do next

We fit a CO alarm with every new boiler and check alarms on every landlord inspection.
