Replacing an oil boiler: how to plan it

Short answer

Plan it before the old boiler fails, ideally outside the winter rush. Check the tank, oil lines and flue at the same time, and price a heat pump alongside — with the SEAI grant and the new €2,000 boiler scrappage support, it can work out closer than you expect.

Most oil boilers in Cork homes are either inside (kitchen or utility) or an external boiler in a weatherproof casing. A like-for-like swap is usually a one-day job. If the tank is old, it is often sensible to replace it at the same time rather than pay for a second visit later.

What changes the answer

  • age and condition of the oil tank and bund
  • where the boiler sits (kitchen, boiler house or outside)
  • the cylinder and controls
  • whether a heat pump suits the house

What you can check yourself

  • look at the tank for rust, weeping or a damaged base
  • note the boiler make, model and age
  • find your BER if you have one

What to do next

Ask for two prices side by side: a new oil boiler, and a heat pump with the grant shown against it.
